Touch a characteristic point on the latent print and then the same point on the suspect's card. That card was taken at a different tilt: look at the shape the points make with each other, not where they fall.
With eight matches you can sign off an identification. Three mismatches rule a card out.
A print lifted from a glass, and three ten-print cards from the archive. All three look alike: the same pattern type, right loop. What doesn't look alike are the characteristic points — where a ridge ends or splits — and the shape they form together. The right card was taken at a different tilt, so don't look for where the points fall: look for what they form.
